How to Read the Chart

Point & Figure charts consist of columns of X's and O's which show an uptrend or downtrend in the price respectively. The numbers and letters in the chart represent the beginning of a month (e.g. 9 for September, A for October, etc.) To eliminate minor price fluctuations, P&F charts define a minimum price movement called Box size. If the price rise or fall is less than the box size, it is not indicated on the chart. A column change from X to O or vice versa happens when the prices reverse in the amount of "Reversal" size (typically 3) multiplied by Box size.

For example, in the P&F chart for EUR/USD, if the Box size is 30 pips (indicated with B:0.0030), and Reversal size is 3 (R:3) and we currently have an uptrend (column of X's), a price increase of more than 30 pips over a period of time will add more X on top of the column while a price decrease of more than 90 pips will reverse the trend and create a column of O's corresponding to the amount of fallen price.

As we now publish this classic stock market book online in the year 2009 I cannot help but to draw parallells between DeVillier's and Taylor's foreword and the market we are facing today. Charles Dow: The same man who founder of the Dow Industrial Average and Wall Street Journal is also credited with the creation of Point & Figure Charting.

Point & Figure charting has been around for a VERY long time.

In fact, most credit Charles Dow (the same "Dow" behind the "Dow Industrial  Average" and founder of the Wall Stree Journal) with creating, or at the very least popularizing, this trading method.

Because of its simplicity and accuracy, Point & Figure trading flourished during the late 1800s through the 1930s.

But by the 40's and 50's, Point & Figure charts started to give way to more "fancy" and "detailed" charts (ignoring why Dow chose Point & Figure charting in the first place!)

But even though Point & Figure was less popular, the chart method  were still accepted and still used by many floor traders.

And then almost overnight...

Now that we have had a look at how to construct a P&F chart, the next question is how do we read it. It is clearly understood by P&F experts that the law of supply and demand determines the price of the stock. If the issue is rising in price and we have an uptrend in place with at least three X's, we believe that demand has overcome supply. The reverse, when that chart gives us three O's, indicates supply has overcome demand. P&F charts show us the establishment of trends, trend reversals, and the supply and demand of charted issues.
